I left the theater full of many of the emotions depicted on screen because the story, more than anything, is very serious at its core. Here's the amazing thing about "Inside Out." I walked into the theater expecting the standard feel-good comedy/animated movie Pixar and Disney have become famous for creating. Meanwhile, Joy and Sadness must learn to rely on each other to find their way back to command center before Riley completely loses her personality. Pretty soon, Riley's entire personality is on the verge of crumbling as she struggles to deal with moving to a new city, leaving her friends behind and attending a new school. When Joy tries to prevent Sadness from touching other core memories, a mishap involving headquarters occurs, shooting Joy and Sadness into the further recesses of Riley's mind - and leaving Disgust, Fear and Anger alone in the command center.
As Riley's family moves from Minnesota to San Francisco, Sadness touches one of Riley's core memories, turning it from yellow to blue and forever tainting the memory. That's largely because Joy - a radiant yellow Tinkerbell lookalike- is in control of Riley's mind control center.
When we first meet her, Riley is a mostly joyful young girl who loves hockey, has lots of friends and adores her parents. There are five emotions living inside the control center of Riley's mind - Joy (voiced by Amy Poehler), Sadness (Phyllis Smith), Fear (Bill Hader), Disgust (Mindy Kaling) and Anger (Lewis Black). "Inside Out" takes part mostly inside the mind of an 11-year-old girl named Riley. Kids will enjoy it, too, even though they might not understand why their moms and dads are laughing so hard and then crying - or simply sniffling - during certain parts of it. Its director, Pete Doctor, admitted "Inside Out" wasn't made for children. There weren't a lot of children in my theater, and a special Q&A afterwards highlighted a revelation I'd had watching this animated movie. However, Eric Hynes of The Village Voice was more positive, praising the film as a "meandering, eccentric, downright adorable existential crime yarn", while noting that Levesque's performance was closer to "a steroidal Steven Seagal" than " Hackman or Cagney".Disney and Pixar did something earlier this week they've never done before and teamed with Fathom Events to screen "Inside Out" early for those studios' diehard fans willing to pay extra for the privilege. The New York Post's Lou Lumenick derided Inside Out as "nonsensical, thickly plotted gumbo" which he found to be unintentionally funnier than Levesque's other starring role in the comedy film The Chaperone. Gold described the plot as "a tangle of dithering storylines" and Levesque's acting as "inert".
Writing for The New York Times, Daniel M. On Metacritic, the film has a weighted average score of 28 out of 100, based on 8 critics, indicating "generally unfavorable reviews". On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds an approval rating of 25% based on 12 reviews, with an average rating of 2.66/10.
